Mattia Nelles

Mattia Nelles is a political analyst, leader, and intellectual inspirer of the Bureau's team.

Mattia focuses on Eastern Europe, but especially Ukraine, where he lived and worked for several years. From late 2022 to September 2023, he served as a foreign policy advisor of Robin Wagener, a member of the Bundestag and the Green Party’s rapporteur on Ukraine. Before that, he worked as a communication consultant in Ukraine for the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) on projects in Eastern Ukraine. Until late 2020, Mattia was the Program Director for Ukraine at the Center for Liberal Modernity (LibMod) in Berlin. There he managed, among other things Ukraine verstehen and a consulting project with the Ukrainian Parliament.

He holds a master’s degree in political science from Free University of Berlin. Mattia is a Member of the Supervisory Board of the International Center for Ukrainian Victory Foundation (ICUV), which advocates for and defends Ukraine’s global interests and supports actions to accelerate victory in various dimensions over the short and long term. Mattia is also one of the co-founders and board members of the Deutsch-Ukrainische Gesellschaft (DUG) e.V. This German-Ukrainian platform aims at strengthening Ukraine expertise in Germany.
